View Full Version : What is arugula?
Maybe the taste of this is not so attractive to most of you but this as salad is very healthy!
What is arugula?
Also called rocket, roquette, rugula and rucola, arugula is a slightly bitter, aromatic salad green with a peppery mustard flavor. Though it has long been extremely popular with Italians, American palates often find its flavor too assertive. Arugula (which resembles radish leaves) can be found in specialty produce markets and in some supermarkets. It's sold in small bunches with roots attached. The leaves should be bright green and fresh looking. Arugula is very perishable and should be tightly wrapped in a plastic bag and refrigerated for no more than 2 days. Its leaves hold a tremendous amount of grit and must be thoroughly washed just before using. Arugula makes a lively addition to salads, soups and sautéed vegetable dishes. It's a rich source of iron as well as vitamins A and C.
I love arugula!

You may want to try Yellow Cab's latest specialty pizza "Dear Darla." It's definitely unique and healthy! They will serve you thin-crust pizza, sliced in long strips, some oil with chili, and a separate plate or carton box that has the arugula and alfalfa sprouts on it. You get yourself a slice, spread as much alfalfa and arugula as you'd like over it, pour some chili oil (not that hot, so don't be alarmed) and roll it.
Voila! You've got your pizza "rolling."
I like the interesting combination of chili oil, greens and pizza, and of course, the unconventional way of eating it. ^^

Arugula contains about eight times the calcium, fives times the vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K, and four times the iron as the same amount of iceberg lettuce. It is known to regulate immune function and play a role in cancer prevention. Arugula is related to both the radish and the flavor of the leaves is similarly hot and peppery. It is a spicy little leaf, which some describe as bitter and others characterize as having a peppery mustardy flavor.
