"Can" refers to the ability or possibility. "Could" means to be able to
And here's the other way that "can and could"are used.
You can learn english. (a positive affirmation) You could learn english. (an affirmation with limitation) Does this help some?

Yes, you are right, skykeeper. Could denotes weaker meaning; denotes an action that is less likely to be done.
