Can we start a sentence with 'so'?
My trainers before told me that we should not start a sentence with 'so' but I can still see essays with sentences beginning with 'so.'
It's very confusing.

It's very confusing.
If you are a teacher, I suggest you correct the mistake.
If the meaning of "so" is therefore or as a result, it must immediately follow the main clause introduced by a comma, as in:
He was tired, so he went to bed early.
So must not begin a sentence because it is a conjunction that takes the meaning of "as a result".
So as a conjunction has only one possible position: between two sentences;
unlike the transition, "therefore", which can move positions as in:
He was tired. Therefore, he went to bed early.
He was tired. He, therefore, went to bed early.
He was tired. He went to bed early, therefore. (Grammatically correct although uncommon)
I hope this helps.:approve:
