Hi, everyone!
I have a project of making an English Writing book for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. The students who will be using the book are Koreans. I need to find some references or sample books. This is my first time to make one so I am going to need a lot of help. Is there any book that you'd recommend? It would mean a lot to me.
Hope to hear from you soon!:prayer:

you may use some helpful books sold at US Information Service, US Embassy.
one particular book I use for my students who do writing is " The English You Need to Know" by Murray Bromberg. It is reading and writing book intended for intermediate to high intermediate learners. You can also buckle down with Practice and Progress by L. G. Alexander. :gud:
Can you suggest some more, ms ctivnan? :thankyou:

Hello Majal!
Here's a list of some writing books and resources for you. :Cat Smiley 6111:
Practice and Progress by L. G. Alexander
- this one has a holistic approach to teaching and learning English. I like this because I can teach reading, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and writing. The book is for Pre-Intermediate, but in my experience with Koreans, this one would be Intermediate for them. The book is divided into Units and if I remember it right, each unit is progressive: from basic sentence structures to complex sentences.
Developing Skills by L. G. Alexander
- this one is for advanced learners. It really focuses on developing students' writing skills and vocabulary. There are still some grammar reviews, but not as much as in Practice and Progress. The writing exercises here are from guided to independent writing. The focus is on the process, not so much on the product, which is a very good thing!
From Sentence to Paragraph by Robert Bander
- This one is really for advanced students as well. There are so many exercises here: transitions, writing topic sentences, controlling ideas, and important elements of a paragraph, which are discussed in full.
Stylistics
- you can get this book in UP Educ. I'm not that sure who the author is though. I used this one for teaching punctuation although there are still some important pointers on writing here. It is an old book, but I find it reliable still. This book is a reference.
The Process of Paragraph Writing by Joy M. Reid
- it is for an advanced level. This book focuses on Expository Writing: cause and effect, definition, process, etc. These methods are discussed (though not in full). What I like about this book are sample works done by multicultural students.
Fundamentals of English Grammar by Betty Azar
- okay, a good foundation in grammar is essential in building and polishing writing skills. You can get some simple grammatical explanations from the verb "be and have," tenses, and to clauses. I like the part on clauses because it teaches you a step-by-step approach to learning Adjective and Noun clauses. Check out Building Sentences together, too (conjunctions and transitions). This book is intermediate to high intermediate.
Understanding and Using English Grammar by Betty Azar
- This is high-intermediate to advanced level. It is actually a review of Fundamentals, but it has more grammar information. The part of adverb clauses is very good, and Building Sentences together (?) (I forget how the chapter is called. hehe) are very good for helping to improve writing.
A TESOL Professional Anthology: Grammar and Composition edited by Carol Cargill
- this book is a compilation of references for teachers. It is a good read as you start your books. Unit II is focused on composition and I like two articles there: Teaching Intermediate Composition to the Adult Learning English as a Second Language by Yvonne Cadiz and Selecting and Preparing Meaningful and Communicative Exercises for the ESL Writing Class by Gerry Strei
Try looking for Nunan's books on Second Language Teaching and Learning. They are good sources in understanding the ins and outs of teaching and learning.
Composing in a Second Language is also a good resource book. It has a topic on the composition styles of English speakers, the Orientals, etc.
Purdue's Online Writing Lab is a great resource, too! You may want to check that out. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/ It's a great reference site! They even have exercises and the webmaster is nice. They can allow you to use their materials as long as you ask permission and give them a feedback on them.
You can also go to the Cultural Affairs of the US Embassy (Taft Ave.) to look for some materials on writing. They have some beginner writing books there. You just have to make an appointment before going there. They are the ones distributing the English Language "Forum" magazines. You can check it out online as well. It's a great resource, too.
I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
All the best to you!
N.B.
The language levels mentioned above are for second language learners, like the Koreans.

Hello Patis,
What you say is true. And you are one of them, too.
lots of love, joy and laughter,
Lita
I think this calls for the callcenter dudes and dudettes to compile some kept, stole, bought, or whatever training manuals, hand overs, or whatever again........
there are a lot of useful stuff some people might not even know...
and I love the way they give their trainings... -just like having fun
