CAN or COULD?

Modals convey a lot of meanings. Making suggestions is just one of them.

CAN, apart from its many meanings, can also be used to make suggestions about POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS / ACTIONS to a problem.

e.g.
We've got three choices: we can go to CLSC, to SM, or to Tri Noma.
We can discuss about the possibilities and then do the project.

COULD, apart from its many meanings, can also be used to make suggestions which are MORE TENTATIVE or LESS STRONG.

e.g.
Could we meet again tomorrow?
We could go to Tri Noma, if you like.

*** REMEMBER: MODALS are always followed by a SIMPLE VERB FORM (no -s, -es, -d, or -ed) regardless of meaning. ***

Hi! What you wrote is very helpful. You're quite right. Using "could" with suggestions are less strong and more tentative, like you are treading on somewhat unfamiliar ground. I totally agree with you!

could suggests that you are careful with what you are suggesting not knowing if the suggestions are acceptable to the person you are conversing with. Or maybe you are talking to somebody you're not very familiar with and you are taking into consideration his/her preferences. I think using "could" is a more polite way of making suggestions. (And getting what you want. Laugh!) :laugh1: Seriously, it's a more polite way of saying, "These are the things I want to do. or These are the acceptable places for me. What about you?" I hope i'm right. This is what i understand with how "could" is being used in conversations. Smile!:love2:
