Today I call myself a Tagalog and not a Filipina or Filipino. A Tagalog who also has a blood tie with the natives of our neighboring Islands The Sugbuanon (Visayan), and people of Mindanao.
We are called Filipinos or Filipinas because we live in the Philippines today. The problem is its meaning, it was once derived from Isles Philip also called Islas Filipinas during the 1500's, under King Philip II.
I don't want to be called Filipina because it meant that we were slaves
Near the year 1570's when Legazpi, Goiti, Salcedo came and took over Manilla by these conquistadors. They were given land by their king that weren't theirs for the taking in the first place. For them to have power they need slaves so under them 10,000 Indios (meaning slaves later named Filipinos). In 333 years of Spaniards who came and went taking with them our lost identity and the once 600 years of beautiful and blooming system of our growing culture that was intervened by them.
As of Today I am a Tagalog. Taga means "derived from" and log taken from the word Mlog meaning "river". Originally we were called "River Dwellers", unfortunately the river we dwelled upon is now dirty and almost dead, the "Pasig River" near the Kingdom Tundo (Tundun) and Seludong (later known as Manila). The center of once known empire Lusung Guo also called Luzon.
Since the Spaniards left we were too busy taking care of our status in today's time, that we have completely forgotten where we truly came from. Taking for granted the only home for our culture and true treasures we once had.
