Pun or paronomasia is a form of word play and if it's play then it must be fun. I love pun but I want to now it's proper usage and why some writers say "no pun intended". Recent puns I read were: "Kubica Poles Apart" and "Hamilton's performance is whiter than white(no pun intended)"
The thing with puns is that sometimes they're corny and unoriginal. Like when somebody gets mangled to death by a grizzly bear, newspapers will report it as "A Grizzly Death." You put "no pun intended" to save face from potential stone throwing.
I had never heard that word before, I had read punny, but its meaning is way different!

patis hold your thought, i'm coming to get you at easy peasy.
Here is an example of a pun related story.
So last night I was waiting for my friend by a burger joint. This guy on a bike asks me how to get to this place. I told him "Go straight down that road, and when you reach Maguinhawa (comfortable) Road make a left and keep going."
"How do I know it's already Maguinhawa?" he asks.
"When the road's already wide, it's Maguinhawa." No pun intended.

The use of puns actually depends on the context. In your example, "Kubica Poles Apart," Poles Apart must refer to something that fell apart when it wasn't supposed to (of course I couldn't say for sure because I don't really know the context of the example). To add humor to the occasion, one might comment using the same words or words that sound similar to the ones used during the occasion (or to name a thing).
'No pun intended,' is used the way Patis just mentioned... OR really just to say, "i'm not using wordplay -- even though it sounds like it."

Just for context:
These are from the Formula 1 GP held in Bahrain last Sunday. Kubica is a BMW driver from Poland, who had the pole position, but ended up winning just the 3rd fastest in the Bahrain Circuit. Hamilton, on the other hand, is a Briton driving for McLaren, and if I'm not mistaken, the first driver of African descent. He was a phenomenal rookie last year and hopes are high for him this year. He is still number 1 in the overall championship for this year. Unfortunately, during practice last Friday, his car crashed, but he got a third position in the qualifying (third from Kubica) at the start of the race. His car had a bad start during the race and it continued to be in such a disaster! He finished 13th (not winning any points), the worst ever in his F1 career.

ctivnan is absolutely right. The writer is punning on the context of Kubica being from Poland and winning the pole position, Hamilton was praised for sportsmanship when he allowed the Ferrari cars to lap him with ease. Pun was not intended to avoid the racist implication from Hamilton's African roots.

Here's a pun from the Catalunya circuit:
Catch Kimi if you can!
The writer is punning on the name of Raikonnen and the popular chasing game 'catch me if you can. This headline saddens me but I know many in EC who are thrilled. Let's see what really happens on the track on Sunday.:wub1:
