Doesn't it depend on the context?

a) Majority of the people are religious -- is correct if you're talking about a specific group of people (say, most of the people in class)

b) Majority of the population are religious -- is correct if you're talking about a huge group of people (as in majority of the Philippine population are religious)

c) er... I don't think it's correct...

:)

:thanks: for answering, Skykeeper and Maria_maria! :animal-bear:

I'm sorry to inform you that the correct answer is NONE of the ABOVE.

According to Jonathan Malicsi, the expression, majority of should be preceded by an article, so:

e.g. The majority of the people are religious.
(= Most of the people...)

:thanks: for your explanation, Maria_maria! I also think that it depends on the context as you have explained.

What's the rule for the expression "majority rules"?

"Majority" here serves as the subject (a group acting as a whole) of your verb, so it is followed by a singular verb. Except when it clearly implies countable subjects.

The majority rules. ^^
The voters have voted and the majority (of the voters) have chosen Obama.

Hope that helps. :Cat Smiley 6111:
