ONE'S versus ONCE :listening:

ONE'S is a possessive form and it is pronounced with a final /z/ sound.

e.g.
One's opinion is important in writing an argumentative paper.


ONCE is an adverb pronounced with a final /s/ sound.

e.g.
Once an opinion has been given, people should stop and think.

These words are spelled differently and have different meanings; however, a speaker / a listener can mistake one over the others.

SIGHT, CITE, or SITE?

SIGHT (n) refers to VISION.
e.g. He has a good sense of sight.

CITE (v) means to QUOTE or REFER to a passage, a book, etc.
e.g. Students are encouraged to cite their sources.

SITE (n) refers to LOCATION
e.g. The engineers have to do on-site inspections.

KEY versus QUAY


These two words are pronounced identically /ki:/.

KEY /ki:/ (n) - a small piece of shaped metal with incisions cut to fit the wards of a particular lock, and that is inserted into a lock and turned to open or close it.

e.g.
I have a nasty habit of losing my car keys.


QUAY /ki:/ (n) - a concrete, stone, or metal platform lying alongside or projecting into water for loading and unloading ships. (similar to harbor)

e.g.
They moored at the quay so that the passengers could embark.
