In Phonology, we deals with the SEGMENTALS and the SUPRASEGMENTALS in order to go from accuracy to fluency in pronunciation.
When we say SEGMENTALS, we are referring to the "building blocks," i.e. the consonant and the vowel sounds; hence, we focus on ACCURACY. The SUPRASEGMENTALS, on the other hand, deals with the FLUENCY. Here we go beyond the segmentals and learn more about proper STRESS, INTONATION, LINKING, and JUNCTURE (proper pausing).
STRESS
'present (noun)
pre'sent (verb)
tech'nology
antici'pation
INTONATION
Falling intonation: declarative sentences; WH/H questions.
I have a sister.
How old are you?
Rising Intonation: surprises; YES/NO questions
Wow!
Are you a Coffeer?
LINKING
The use of /w/ and /j/ in connecting words and they sound like one word.
/w/
To(w)eat fruit is fun!
/j/
The(j)earth goes round the sun.
JUNCTURE
Proper pausing
night/rate
ni/trate
The woman/ who went to the theater is my friend.
Hope this information helps! ^^, :inlove:
