I've been in this forum for quite sometime now and I have read almost all the post/threads here...
I have noticed that almost half of the threads are not really into what this site is all about.
A friend whom I invited here commented that "there are a many post that are not of quality. This is not about posting or getting the top poster award, most people visit this site to learn and discuss something with other members"...
I hope that when someone we invited here visit the site they will find more post/thread that will help them learn and understand English language usage...
note: I hope that this thread will not offend anyone here
Seven (7) weeks ago this site was empty! As you can see the posts are contributions from all of us. It's open to all members to help contribute quality posts.
Unfortunatly, there are leech people that just want to absorb information and stay in the background as a Guest or inactive member. We can't do much about it. The leech group is experienced in all forums in the web.
Hopefully, we members, will be able to contribute more to the growth of our forums (by having fun and enjoying coming back). Let's not be too serious about making use of the English language in the strict sense of the word.
Remember that just making the usage of the English language (by writing) here is a way of practicing the language for a good number of us and not an issue whether the posts are relevant to the English Grammar or not.
That's my opinion! :smilie3:

I respect your opinion and i can't argue with it. I just get annoyed when someone whom I invited give comments like that.

maybe some of the post here are not as relevant as what we expect it to be....what is important is that we were able to impart our ideas to other people...
a simple thank you or an acknowledgment on the new members means a lot to some of us...
yes, definitely we are not after the awards....even without the awards..members like me would continue to share what ever info or ideas we have ...we are not restricted to do that.
thank you for such a relevant comment :D..

Some people have a notion that learning the English language, or any language for that matter, is merely focused on grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and the like, as what we normally experience in formal class settings. However, in reality, this is not enough because no language is limited to this. Language is so dynamic that learners must be exposed to its usage in the real world, i.e. language used in books, magazines, conversations, discussions, games, music, movies, or the everyday tidbits of activities each one of us engage in (talking about ourselves, our likes and dislikes, experiences at work or in school, etc.). This refers to the 'language at work', which is the communicative approach in language learning.
Comments like what jophes' friend shared is very important for us because this has given us the opportunity to explain what the role of English Coffee in language learning is. In addition, this is also to clarify some misconceptions people may have and to encourage coffeers to respond and interact to the posts that they are interested in. Now, if the posts are not interesting, start a new thread! Be creative and let us help each other grow and learn more English in ways that we are comfortable in.
Finally, I totally agree with SL's comments about this issue. Moreover, she has expressed herself articulately! Well said, SL!!! :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

I've been in this site for more than two weeks already, but it was not yet so clear to me what this site is all about. Although I maybe at the background most of the time, yet, I appreciated what I have learned from the furoms especially the practical ones which is really useful for daily conversations, that was never thaught from the classrooms. I don't mind if someone will correct me on the grammar or even the way I write in this post which I hope is also part of this site. I would be pleased because I want to learn.
I agree with SL, I appreciated when I was welcomed and thanked here. Thank you!
Thank you jophefs, it is a good comment to ponder on.
Thank you cmo, you have made your point!
Thank you also ctivnan, that was so fair!
Good luck to all of us!
Congratulations we have reached a thousand posts!

One thing I know is you can never stop learning the English language,
I hope my posts are what you consider quality when I do post,
but I absorbed some of the info and didn't think of it as leeching I was grateful for what I learned, the people that read and don't post, might be too embarassed but they might be grateful as well, I like the fact that this site wants to be focused, I hope it does, but th efact that theirs so many members makes it hard for that, but at the same time it is something to be happy about, from what I see there's many quality posts in here.
The word "quality" must be defined. Through that definition, you can then develop a criteria to determine whether or not the post is qualitative or not.
For me, discussion in itself already facilitates learning. It is up to an individual to determine how much learning he or she wants. You can lead the horse to the water, but you can't force it to drink.
In the end, you can get from this forum just as much as you put into it. That means, as an English language learner, you should be asking questions; as a teacher, you should be answering them. That is learning. It's a two-way street.
So ask and post. Then answer and post. Then the posts will become more qualitative. It's dialectic.

Aiepro, well said!!! The quality in this forum will depend on how much I contribute and how much I get from it!!!

How odd. I've been for, about an hour now and so far, I've only read well punctuated, well-thought of quality posts. I've also come across a few tid bits about the language and I'm already feeling at home here.
Whoever said that ought to give this site another try. =]

I agree with you glassedeyes.. I felt the same when I joined the forum.. As you notice, the thread was posted months ago.. I guess, the person who said about this quality posts thing is already enjoying his/her way around this site..
Anyway, welcome here.. Looking forward to seeing your quality posts..

As a memebr of many forum sites, I am already expecting that some members will post topics far from this website's mission and vision. Since this is still a new site, I guess it is just right to give it time to attain its purpose. However, I suggest that administrators will make a folder for topics that are not related to the site (e.g. Out of Topic), where we can just talk anything under the sun. This site is suppose to be sharing, right? Let's not limit it to the four corners of English Langauge. Remember, even the structure of education changed from traditional to progressive. I believe that this website is a helpful one.

Thanks for the comments. :thankyou:
The forums General Interests and Various are somehow "off-topic" and we thought of doing that to help members to expand their daily life in our community.
Please feel free to see if we need to add more forums or sub-forums as we are really very new and learning the needs from each member here.
We have the "Coffee Break" where we can talk about anything off-topic.

i agree with ctivnan that learning english is a dynamic process, and not just learned through everything taught in english classes. we learn a lot through interacting and communicating through posts, sensible or not, crazy or otherwise. at least we learn how one thinks, how another makes replies to posts and how others put up a lot of effort in making us laugh and be amused. some posts also reveal character and personality. some posts, the way i see them are bringing each other together at another level of friendship even if they haven't had an eyeball to eyeball experience. however, it's a matter of truest fact that we can't please all and let it stand. i am personally happy for all posts i read. thanks for all the coffeers and thanks for the tough stand of the administrators of this forum . kudos.!!

i agree with sl and ctivnan that learning english is not just confined to the rudiments of grammar and everything around it. learning this language is a dynamic process where interacting and communicating in more ways than one seems to be more acceptable. this forum offers a lot of information that one finds at his disposal. others may have a more vivid expectation of what should be the contents or what shouldn't be of this forum. but this is the edge... we can share anything and we are free to read or not to read posts. actually, we can chose what posts to read and what not to read. that practically lies in our hands. however, respecting each post made (whether the purpose was just to gain mileage in posting or otherwise) is a mature coffeer attitude.
this forum has given me the chance to at least know new friends through posts and threads, and consider them my forum friends. i also gain some wisdom in analyzing character and personality of those whom i interact with. i love this forum and i salute the coffeers who make a lot of effort in posting and starting threads, even in welcoming new members, or in simply thanking posts. kudos to the tough stand of our forum administrators.
