The words much and many mean a lot of.
If a noun is in singular, we use much Example: much money
If a noun is in plural, we use many Example: many friends

Just additional information and a clarification:
If a noun is a noncount noun (http://english-coffee.com/showthread.php?t=2325&highlight=count+nouns), we use much.
If a noun is a plural count noun, we use many.
If we say, "singular" that can mislead people into believing that they can use count noun singular with "much" (e.g. much pen, much cup), which is not the case.
