Watch English movies (with subtitles preferably) so that you will be able to learn and recognize what they are saying.
Read books - read them aloud that is, to practice your voice and tongue.
Talk, Talk, Talk in English! Don't worry about your grammar.....as you go along the way you'll find that you'll improve in it (that is if you will study and update your vocabulary words) the important thing to remember it to get the "information to the other side" --- That is communication!

I agree with Dokerik. Immerse yourself to English movies and music. Try to use English as much as you can. You have to make it a part of your lifestyle to feel comfortable in it.
Basically, fluency has something to do with proper stress, intonation, etc., so listening, particularly to the rhythm of the language, is also important.

i don't want to bring any mess in every conversation we make...I mean my big problem is I don't know if my grammars are correct, so I'm so shy to talk to other people in English..Not because I don't like to be criticized, I'm just afraid to hear they words toward me,,, But I'm still ready to accept and admit my mistakes in order to correct my wrongs and in order to proceed on with my life...I am supposed to do that cause I'm learning English...
Me too. I'm shy and I make terrible mistakes whenever I speak in English.

We can learn grammar here at EC. This forum abounds with helpful posts and threads and it is the right place for you and me. It may take time to do that, but don't worry. Practice writing and speaking a great deal. I do believe in the saying, "Practice makes perfect".

I agree. But just to add, when I was in a communication skills training, I learned that correct practice makes perfect...

Should I say, make it your habit to speak English everyday? And try to learn at least one new word a day, use it in speaking and writing, and presto, in a year, you must be using 365 new words as part of your active vocabulary.
And visit this forum as frequently as possible.:music-smiley-7524:

Hi Guys and Girls!
Just a tip for everybody: In our vessel there are 50 POB (personnels on board), a mixture of Norwegians, Irish, British,Americans,Russians, Asians (Malaysians,Indonesians,Indian, Pinoys!Hehehe Filipinos) You name it! Talking in English is a common day to day activity and if you can just hear all the wrong grammars, sentences, intonations etc. that these people are saying------ you will sure overcome your "shyness"! Hehehe :lol:The important thing is to get the "right information across" That is Communication! (Just look at Melanie Marquez----she might be talking bad English( verry baddd! hahaha) but still she can communicate with it.
Using the right grammars is really important but if you know it and you don't use it-----then it's not good to anybody. With the way you guys write here in EC....I'm sure you will be good in speaking English too! Come on...don't be shy!:wink1::lol:
ctivnan,
Thanks again for this site!!:victory::victory::victory:

My dear, you're not alone when it comes to having those fears, but I hope this bit helps. Fluency is not much about accuracy, as even native speakers experience problems with being grammatically accurate. For as long as you get your message across, you will do just fine. Keep that in mind for starters, build up your stock of words and use them. After all, practice "still" makes perfect.
Experts say that one of the problems of some English learners is that they tend to "hypercorrect" themselves. They get overly conscious of what they say or write, which really gets in the way of their learning English. Do not let that happen to you.
By the way, you should check out the thread on Free English lessons. That and a million of other resources on the Internet are just a few clicks away. Use them to your advantage. Most importantly, your buddies here, including myself, would be glad to be of help. So don't lose heart!
Best of luck!

I think grammar is important. However, it's not the most important!
I noticed that the main reason that Filipinos don't improve their English is because they refuse to speak in front of other people. I don't blame them -- Filipinos are known to criticize other Filipinos and it's a sad fact.
The problem is, the best way to learn English is to practice, practice, practice! This means that we should use the language all the time and without shyness.
What about grammar? Well, pick up some hints from this forum, or better yet, enroll in a grammar class. The place to worry about grammar is in the classroom. When you're not in the classroom, try not to be anxious about your grammar and speak in English.
(don't worry about others who are listening either)
