MANAGING YOUR CAREER TODAY 2
It’s your responsibility – and yours alone
TO MANAGE YOUR CAREER STRATEGICALLY and effectively over the long haul, you need to take charge of all the work-related influences that you can control. That means thinking seriously about the following:
1. The kind of work you want to do.
2. Where you want to do it.
3. What kinds of people (if any) you want to work with.
4. How you find meaning and satisfaction in your work.
5. How easily you’re able to separate your “work self” from your “personal self” (if you can do that at all)
Once you do the thinking. You’ll need to make decisions and choices, develop short and long-range action plans, and begin to follow them. No one can accomplish these things for you. No organizations will build your road to career success.
No matter how talented or skilled you are, no company, plant, institution and foundation, association, or professional society is going to set you up to succeed. You have to do these things yourself.
Designing your career path (and pursuing success on it) is no one’s responsibility but your own.
