Accent shouldn't matter, but it does. American accent is considered the global accent. Globalization is the word.

Accent shouldn't matter, but it does. American accent is considered the global accent. Globalization is the word.
I see. I will use "global accent" and see how my students react. In my class, I normally use "standard accent," which is American.
However, in Europe the British accent still rules!
Accent does matter! I think that if you choose to learn a particular variety of English, you should be consistent. Personally, it feels strange to hear someone with a mixed accent, i.e. British and American accent combined or Filipino and American accent combined.
I actually find non-American accents to be sexy. This era of globalization just demands the American one. I actually teach Neutralized American Accent, and I currently have over 40 students in three different groups.

Seemingly everyone's going for either American or British. I for one like playing around with the British Accent, but to use it in normal, everyday talk sounds difficult.
Scottish is pretty fun too.
I forgot how the Irish accent sound like but I do remember Brosnan Pierce is Irish so, hmm.

I prefer the mixed combinations, American,British and Canadian accents. I wonder how will they mix up. I just want to have a little variation of the tone and pronunciation of words and a little experiment maybe.

Yes,you`re definitely right. It`s an international language use in every part of the globe. And it is still my interest to enhance further my skill specifically in English conversation.

The idea of calling the English we know or should I say the English some of us know as Carabao-English isn't very positive though. There's this complex reason that I am being lazy to type. (Sorry)
I'd say it's English of Filipino accent.

I prefer american accent. Used to talk to them everyday at work before I got transferred to the UK team.
I find it easy to understand talking to americans than british people.
Also, most (if not all) teachers at school, uses american accent than british accent.

Ditto! Moi love the British accent
There are different accents whether it be American or British. The American English we hear in the news is the American Broadcast standard. The British English a lot of us here from Brosnan, Grant and the BBC crew is what BBC news english is.
The British english is predominantly non-rhotic. hence, they do not pronounce the letter "R" . To learn more on British english. You can visit www.bbc.co.uk (http://www.bbc.co.uk) and click the link on learning english.

That might also mean "la-singlish" (drunk-lish) haha i sometimes here that specially when people around me are drunk they speak in english as in sing-lish haha!
In that case, Singlish is the first accent I developed. The more sozzled I was the more slang I spoke.:bowling_laugh:
My opinion of accents and their palatability differs from the American English/accent advocates mainly because British English is widely understood by European and African natives unlike American English. Therefore I wouldn't outrightly declare that either version is the most spoken nor understood.

I guess it depends on which accent is more intelligible to the person you're talking to.
Here in the Philippines, I tend to lean towards the American accent because it's what people understand. However, when I was in Prague and Japan, I had to switch to a British accent because they could understand it better.

That true Maria_maria, the English language is now gearing toward intelligibility in terms of accent, among many others.

learned irish and american english in school but now more focused on what is best understood by my young students :wink1:
gAn it was irish and american english in school right ?
Ayume... we were taught American English by Irish nuns!!!! :)
Thanks, Veron!
I thought I was absent when they taught you Irish English.

am sure you're not absent gAn... maybe Ayunie was....
thank you veron and gAn
oh well i was probably dreaming away :cat: :tease:
Ayumie, gAn and Veron
whatever it was, i believe we were pretty well taught in written as well as spoken English sans the particular idiosyncracies of specific native speakers but the kind of English that is universally intelligible, aurally as well as in print. What say you, Chicas?
Couldn't have said it better, la_i!
:thatsit:
:) :happy0007:
yeah La-i! You said it all to a T! :flashy:
Thanks, Veron. In a global village wherein understanding is the ultimate goal, accents can impair intelligibility. Best not to adhere to any particular accent but uphold the principles of proper diction and clear articulation.
i agree! I vote "American english".. more apprehendable.. one british woman came to me one time and asked a tea, o my gosh.. what's ti you are talking about.. as i watched films in english and british, i love american english sound.. that's why i'm collecting "prison break" sessions.

Other than the fact that we have closer ties with the Americans (politically), American English is still the global lingua franca. In shooting Hollywood movies, for instance, British and Australian actors have to shift to the American accent and some even have dialect coaches on the set to help them!
Of course, let's not forget that the fact we speak English with an American accent is one of the reasons why several outsourcing companies choose the Philippines as their destination.

I prefer the English accent... which is also called the British accent... English originated in England that's why it's called English.. ;) but yea, it's nice to listen to them.. they vary from county to county and city to city.. very engaging and unique.. You easily know where certain individuals are from when listening to their accent.

I would be delighted to sit with you and speak various English accents. It's actually easy because it would just be impersonating persons from different countries whom I've met in the past 25 years of my stay here in Bahrain. Perhaps you wouldn't believe but I can easily tell the nationality of a person by his accent alone just as I can identify a Filipino from which place in the Philippines he is. The secret is remembering real personalities and how they speak with their accent.:superhappy:
I am looking forward to that EB not just over 'a cup of coffee' but over 'cups of coffee'.:coffee1::coffee1::coffee1::coffee1::coffe e1::coffee1::superhappy:

You must really a "people person" and your knack for impersonating them is simply for the books. It would be exciting to see you doing that in person. My hats to you, man from Bahrain. :okay:
