It looks like that English language is becoming more and more used by many different countries as their second language.

Will this be the trend for international communication and English language will be the dominating language?

:hey: CMO, I think English has already dominated the world of Business and Communication. There are studies which show that there are many people studying and speaking English from other languages than native speakers.

Hi q_sharon!

I was wondering what it is you mean about hook, line and sinker.

it means completely. other idiomatic expressions with similar meaning are:

1. lock, stock and barrel
2. (go) the whole nine yards
3. the whole kit and caboodle

In today's globalised market the trend definitely points toward English as becoming the dominant language. Actually I and most people are under the impression that it is already the dominant language. What is the dominant language at present? Is it Spanish? I can't understand the basis if it's the one.

Yes. Maybe today's most dominate language is English, but, perhaps later on the most dominant might be Chinese. :D Before it was French, then Spanish, then English oh my! oh my! I hope it's not Chinese. It's hard to learn Mandarin. :perspiring:

It already is the global tongue.

Indeed it is, specially in the business world! My son is being tapped to work in Thailand because of his proficency in English. The Thais are having hard time conversing with their American counterparts in business...

Yes, I too believe English is the dominant language in the world today. It is widely used in science, business and technology. Several years back people said Japanese would eventually replace English as the international language because of the continued Japanese presence and dominance in the global economy and financial markets. That never came to pass. Today it's the Chinese and they are so numerous. Their presence has long been established internationally with virtually every country in the world hosting a Chinatown. People love to eat Chinese food and almost everything you buy at the stores today is made is China - A/X, iPods, iPhones, LCDs, furnitue, etc. It's just a matter of time before we sport Swiss watches and flaunt LVs that are manufactured in China. So, with the onslaught of Chinese goods flooding the world market will Chinese eventually replace English as the dominant language?

I really hope not. They say there are over a thousand Chinese characters. Can you imagine replacing your current keyboard with the Chinese version?

English will remain the premiere language although it is important to learn Chinese days or you'll be shut out of lots of opportunities in business and relationships and miss out also on tons of knowledge and information in Chinese websites. You don't need to change your keyboard. The Chinese use the same keyboard. Learning Chinese is not that difficult anymore. You just need a different mindset as you need to think in pictures. In fact, I have two Filipino friends who speak better Mandarin than I do.

English is becoming more and more important as a global language. When you add the influence of America in today's global economy to the historic and current influence of Great Britain, understanding English becomes almost essential to carrying out business in the current economic market. The English Language dominates science, scholarship, and instruction as never before, While it is unlikely that English will achieve the status that Latin had as the sole language of teaching and scholarship at the thirteenth century universities in Europe.
