We use the article THE when we are referring to something definite.

e.g. I saw the dog that ran after the cat.
(the listener knows which dog and which cats the speaker is talking about.)

Now, let's focus on place names and the article 'the'.

We use THE with place names when we refer to:

- Cinemas
e.g. The Classic Cinema, the New Frontier (Cinema), the Globe (Cinema)

- structures with OF
e.g.
the Avenue of the Americas
the South of France

- structures with an ADJECTIVE
e.g.
the Blue House
the Malacanang Palace

- Seas, Oceans, Rivers, and Canals
e.g.
the Red Sea
the Pacific (Ocean)
the Yellow River
the (River) Thames
the Panama Canal

- Countries (with compound names and plural names) and Islands
e.g.
the Irish Republic (but, Ireland)
the United Kingdom (the UK; but Britain)
the United States of America (the US; but America)
the Philippines
the Netherlands
the Virgin Islands

- Mountain ranges
e.g.
the Himalayas
the Andes
the Rockies
the Alps
the Cordillera
