Stifle /'staifl/ (verb)

- to stop someone from breathing or be unable to breathe comfortably because the air is too hot or not fresh.

e.g.
Stale air can be stifling.
John was almost stifled by the smoke.

- to stop something from happening / developing

e.g. Corruption and poverty clearly stifle a country's progress.

- to stop a feeling from being expressed.

e.g. When the young Decky uttered a swear word during dinner, everybody tried to stifle their laughter.
