DepEd strenghthens ICT governance
MANILA (PNA) - The Department of Education (DepEd) has strengthened the information and communication technology (ICT) with an order to promote its use as contained in the 10-point agenda of the administration.
Through this order, the department created and strengthened the ICT governing bodies consisting of committees on governance, technical, ICT unit, regional ICT coordinators and virtual communities.
The order states that the ICT governance committee shall act as the executive committee, which will serve as the approving body of all ICT policies, programs and projects of the department.
It shall also be responsible in crafting standards, policies on ICT in basic education and provide direction on ICT initiatives in the department.
The newly organized ICT governance committee is composed of the following: Romeo Glenn Sumido Jr., Chief of Staff, Chair; Maria Victoria Abcede, Bureau Secondary Education, Co-chair; M. Paul Soriano, Officer-in-Charge, Technical Service; Elmer Guizano, Officer-in-Charge, Information and Communications Technology Unit; Angelita Esdicul, Bureau of Elementary Education; Georgia Usares, Bureau Alternative Learning System; Deogracias Genito, Jr., Office of Planning Service; and Eric Labre, Instructional Materials Council Secretariat, members.
The order further prescribes that the existing ICT technical committee shall provide the overall management, coordination and unification of all ICT programs and projects, specifically on institutional Information Systems Plan for Basic Education (ISPBE).
The Educational Technology Unit (ETU) created by DepEd Order No. 69, s. 1999, now renamed as the Information and Communication Technology Unit (ICTU), shall provide technical support in the formulation and review of ICT policies, standards and initiatives of the department.
“As soon as the hiring policies permit and as the need arises, the ICTU may propose the hiring of the additional personnel or the reassignment of existing ICT-related personnel from other units of the Department,” said Education Secretary Jesli Lapus.
Lapus also ordered the organization of the regional and division ICT coordinating committees tasked to coordinate and evaluate local ICT programs and projects for basic education and governance guided by the DepEd ISPBE.
The virtual communities shall be comprised of educators and stakeholders for the exchange of ideas, information and expertise.
It shall serve as a resource pool for the ICT initiatives of the department. (PNA)
