I'm a total bookworm! I LOVE reading!

The Little Prince is my ultimate fave!!! :okay: Love it to bits!!!

I've read Tuesdays with Morrie, Five People You'll Meet in Heaven (by Mitch Albom), Sophie's World (one of my faves!!!); Watching the Tree, Chinese Cinderella (both by Adeline Yen Mah); Lightness of Being (Kundera); Paolo Coelho collection (the only one I haven't finished reading is The Witch of Portabello); A Walk to Remember (made me cry!); HP 1, 3, and 4 (JK Rowling's a genius!!!); The Far Pavilions (MM Kaye); Quentin's, Evening Class, Silver Wedding (Maeve Binchy); ... oh dear I have read a lot! I have a shelfari account, you can PM me your email and I'll invite you. I have a bit of a collection there of books I've read, I'm reading, and a wish list, too (hehehe)!

Anyway, Tuesdays with Morrie was just very interesting! You see it is so simple, yet it is all about LIFE -- how we are living it and how we should live it (more or less)! 5 People you'll meet in heaven was an exciting read... it deals with relishing our past and conquering pride to forgive and move on.

If you're into Eastern Thought, you'll love Watching the Tree.

I'd better stop 'coz I can go on forever here!

By the way, what do you think about The Little Prince, abhie? ^^

I love The Little Prince. Like Tuesdays with Morrie, it's simple yet there are a lot of lessons to be learned. I enjoyed reading it. One of the must read books. :)

Hi lasher!

I like Poe's works... it can be very twisted but really deep and interesting! ^^ I cannot forget his Annabelle Lee and the Cask of Amontillado!
Seeing Tolkien reminds me of C. S. Lewis. Have you read any of his works? I'm reading Mere Christianity and I am eager to start reading Screwtape Letters. :smilie3: By the way, do you know this modern day Agatha Christie kinda author... if I'm not mistaken, his name is Frost. I heard he's also very good.

I haven't read any Anne Rice novels. What can you recommend for a first timer?

Thanks! :friendz:

Hey now MsC,:hey:

Yes, Poe can be very twisted!:) He was a very dark individual....
I do not recall reading C.S. Lewis, but I will check him out... No, I haven't heard of Frost yet. I'll keep an eye out for him - I luv a good mystery.. Speaking of which, I forgot to mention Arthur Conan Doyle - I just luvs the Sherlock Holmes mysteries!!!!!!
Anne Rice.. Some of her stories are intertwined, but I recommend starting off with "The Queen of the Damned", this story held me rapt throughout, (the movie stunk!! it did not do the story any justice). And then, if you like her style, begin "The Witching Hour trilogy." These start out with "The Witching Hour", "Lasher" and "Taltos" (You're gonna luv, luv, luv Lasher!!!):)

Hey now MsC,

I had to dig out the Poe book and reread Annabel Lee... And for those who haven't read it - please enjoy....

ANNABEL LEE

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea:
But we loved with a love that was more than love -
I and my ANNABEL LEE;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful ANNABEL LEE;
So that her high-born kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me -
Yes! - that was the reason (that all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my ANNABEL LEE.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we -
Of many far wiser than we -
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE.

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling - my darling - my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

From Edgar Allen Poe, Complete Tales & Poems, 2002..........

:thankyou: Lasher! I'm looking forward to reading Anne Rice then... it will be interesting to know why your username is Lasher. :wink1:

When I saw Queen of the Damned, I was at a total loss... it wasn't really interesting. It only proves how limited movies can be in interpreting novels. I remember having read Sheldon's Windmills of the Gods (which I liked very much!) and being so utterly disappointed with the movie in spite of the fact that a famous actress (one of the old Charlie's Angels starred in it - I forget her name now...). Just recently, the harry Potter movie series is really no match to the novels! I've watched the movies before reading and I realized how engaging JK Rowlings can be! She's really good! ^^

I heard C. S. Lewis was a friend of Tolkien. I think his famous works is the Chronicles of Narnia (Although I haven't read it, I saw the film and was impressed by it).

I'm a thriller mystery fan myself. I grew up reading Nancy Drew series. Those were he days...

Thanks again! :yey:

Hey now MsC,

Your welcome..... Rice can be a very detailed writer, I hope you enjoy her fiction. You're right, movies can be very limited.
I don't think I ever read Sheldon, and I only saw some of the Harry Potter movies - I'll slip some Rowling in also......Lewis did the Chronicles of Narnia? I haven't read it either - there's so much good stuff I haven't read yet! It's tough finding the time to read as much as I want to......
I was a Hardy Boys reader,,:)

(I also slipped in some Nancy Drews - but don't you tell somebody!!)..:D

Hi there! Like Pablo Neruda, I've also heard about Umberto Eco, but I haven't had the chance to turn their pages... I'll include them in my list of books to read, though.

What books of theirs can you recommend for someone just starting?

Correct me if I'm wrong, is Ayn Rand's work into philosophy? I've heard this name before from a prof in my philo class.

Thanks in advance! :Cat Smiley 6111:

Great topic, friend!

I'm a bookworm too. I love books by James Clavell, Jeffrey Archer, James Grisham, Amy Tan, Richard Paul Evans, Leon Uris, Isabelle Allende, James Michener, Mark Twain, Pat Conroy, Paulo Coehlo, Leon Uris, JK Rowling, and a lot lot more. hehehehe. I am also looking into your lists, and I find I've read many of them. But there are titles and authors I haven't read yet, like the Little Prince many of you love, and Anne Rice and Stephen King. Hmmm...

I think I have to try 'em and see...

Off-topic question: Can you tell me how to start a thread? I'm thinking of becoming more active here, but I don't know how to start. Nyehehehe.

Thanks folks. Be back again real soon.

Umberto Eco is famous for "In the Name of the Rose", but i think you can pick up any book of his (warning: you may want to have several dictionaries handy, for italian, latin, french, german, and english, among others. don't tell me i ddnt warn you).
Ayn Rand is a philosopher, but her philosophy, Objectivism, isnt being taught in any university in the world except in the Ayn Rand Institute in California so far. i recommend you start with either "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged". From there you can read her non-fiction works.

BTW, i also read paolo coehlo, kahlil gibran, poe, hemingway (i dont enjoy his works though, sorry fans of his), baghavad gita, and whatelse.

you're from UP, right? visit the booksale shop in AS walk, the first one to your left if you're coming in from CASAA.they have an extreme collection and you can also make reservations if they dont have it at the moment. i also have friends there; they're really nice.

my classmate is rod, and sometimes there's ernest. the other folk i just know by face.
i like coehlo, but not as much as the classical authors like hugo and melville. i like gibran too, he's very metaphorical, pretty much like who i aim to be when ive imbibed too much LOL. Poe is good, except that his view in life is very tragic: not a good influence, but good for variety from time to time. and then there's Hemingway.him i do not like. he's a naturalist, and his works are boring. i mean, let me quote a passage from "Fiesta (the sun also rises)":

"They expected their money the next day. We arranged to meet at Pamplona. They would go directly to San Sebastian and take the train from there. We would all meet at the Montoya in Pamplona. If they did not turn up on Monday (now the plot thickens. jeez.) at the latest we would go on ahead up to Burguete in the mountains, to start fishing. There was a bus to Burguete. I wrote out an itinerary so they could follow us."

look at that! it's very ordinary. no action whatsoever. im already leading an ordinary life and that's what he's going to offer me? now let's compare this to a passage from hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame":

"When he reached the high cage of the belfry, Quasimodo gazed for some minutes at his six bells; then, with a sorrowful shake of his head, he sighed to think that some other object had come between him and them. But when he had set them in motion, when he felt the cluster of bells moving under his hand, when he saw, for he did not hear, the palpitating octave ascending and descending that sonorous scale like a bird flitting from branch to branch, when the demon of music - and arpeggios - had taken full possession of the poor deaf hunchback, then he became happy again; he forgot everything else, and his face radiated joy."

see? both ordinary activities, but hugo's passage is full of life, of emotion, brimming with action with a simple push of these bells. but hemingway's... look at his work. so boring.

now you see why i dont like hemingway's works.

I am now totally in love with Hugo's passage! I just love the romance and the flow of the action in those words!!!! Amazing, amazing, and amazing! :mypleasure:

Wow! Whew! I wrote that one with so much passion!!! Yes, I did!

Okay, back to planet earth! ^^ I haven't really had the chance to read Hemingway although I saw loads of his books in my grandma's shelves... I guess I've connected him to my grandma and never really had any desire to read him. Now, I don't really get why she had those... hmmm... :tired-sleeping-smil

Coelho has been inspiring for me... his topics are ordinary and yet he is able to see the depth in their simplicity and somehow, they've been a kind of cure that I needed. Don't wanna bore you.

Gibran, on the other hand is indeed metaphorical; Poe is just mad and romantic! I guess I have a kinda weird sense. In spite of my wallowing in my emotions, I got what you mean and thank you very much for sharing!

Heyyo friends!

Patis, you're right about the book shops at the AS walk. Bought a lot of books there. And the guys are nice. I like buying there because most of the books I've been hunting down for months in bookstores (to no avail), I found them there.

By the way, thanks for that post about Hemingway. I've observed the same thing about his work. His sentences are very simple and... dry. I've read that book from which you quoted his your post (his only work I ever read) and I think its remarkably not remarkable. Jejejeje...

Cath, there is also a small bookshop near next to the Coop. Their collections are great too. Whenever I'm in UP, I always drop by there and end up at least P500 poorer, but the proud owner of at least three good reads! hehehe.

Still looking at your lists guys. It's nice comparing notes with you. I realize there are still a lot I have yet to read. :-)

Hello everyone there,
I love reading books a lot. For this year 2008 I started reading the Harry Potter book series and now am currently in Book 4. I love watching the movie sequels which in a way helps me enjoy the book more as it makes it easier for me to imagine what I am reading.
I know I loved reading The Little Prince book but I think I need to read it again because I have totally forgotten how wonderfully simple yet deep it is.
I am also most interested in reading books on the law of attraction and how it can change your life and attain your dream.
There is just an endless array of books I love to read and if there is one place you can put me in, that would be the library and you wouldf still find me there should you come back and return. hahaha

lots of love, joy and laughter,
LitaPo

the little prince. i read that when i was in sixth grade, when my older sister's doing it for her book review in high school. i had to sneak out because i dont want them to see me crying. LOL!

anyways, it's a really good book. Antoine de Saint-Exupery was, in real life, a pilot, and Coehlo tells of a story that he was captured by Spaniards. the story goes on to tell that in prison, he was released because he smiled at the jail guard. i forgot how it went, but it involved cigarettes, then talk about family, and when the spaniard heard that exupery's family was waiting for him, he "escaped". anyhow, the moral of the story is, coehlo contiues, is that smiles can save lives.
for my part though, it was the cigs. LOL

Hi Everyone!
I'm a newbie in this site and this is my first post hehehe... Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Conversations with God Book 1 by Neal Donald Walsh are my two favorites. Both are very informative and insightful, I highly recommended both...Just keep an open mind!
As For the novels...Rage of Angels by Sidney Sheldon was my very first and I also like the works of Clive Cussler, Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum.
Happy reading to everybody!

Hiya LitaPo!

I like the Harry Potter Series!!! J. K. Rowling's just brilliant, isn't she? It's as though she had thought about the entire story at the very beginning! Wow!
Since I don't have time reading :intears:, I got some audiobook series! It's very cool to listen and imagine how the story goes! :bravo: I have also seen some of the movies and I think that helps me in imagining, too. However, after reading, oh listening to the audiobook, I realize how limited the movies are. Well, there's still fun, yeah? ^^

The Little Prince, oh my gosh, is just the most wonderful book! I totally fell in love with this one! I have read it a couple of times and I still want to read it every now and then just to remember the Little Prince and his rose! :itshere:

Have a great time reading! :cute3:

the little prince. i read that when i was in sixth grade, when my older sister's doing it for her book review in high school. i had to sneak out because i dont want them to see me crying. LOL!

anyways, it's a really good book.
LOL

Must've been the ciggies!

I don't remember having read this in one of Coelho's books... gotta check this out! Or, I may have already forgotten! Oh dear... is that aging? :intears:

Hi Everyone!
I'm a newbie in this site and this is my first post hehehe... Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Conversations with God Book 1 by Neal Donald Walsh are my two favorites. Both are very informative and insightful, I highly recommended both...Just keep an open mind!
As For the novels...Rage of Angels by Sidney Sheldon was my very first and I also like the works of Clive Cussler, Dan Brown and Robert Ludlum.
Happy reading to everybody!

My first book was one of Nancy Drew's series! from then on I've found myself intrigued by sleuth and mystery, so I went on reading Sidney Sheldon's works (I like Windmills of the Gods) with a little bit of the Sweet Dreams (young teen romance books) in between! Oh, those were the days!!!

I haven't read Rich Dad Poor Dad nor Conversations with God. If I have enough time this summer, I'll get 'em and add to my Must Read List! ^^ Conversations with God suddenly reminded me of Mitch Albom's Five People You'll Meet in Heaven (i don't know why, though). Have you read that one? It's pretty good, but I must say I love Tuesdays with Morrie more!

I have read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Conversations with God books 1 and 2. And if you like these books, I would recommend The Celestine Prophecies (oh dear, I forgot the name of the author) and books written by Jaime T. Licauco one of which is When the Impossible Happens.
Happy reading everyone.

i don't know of ayn rand's diamond head. are you talking of the fountainhead?

jared diamond, while not a novelist, wrote an excellent book on the history and fate of nations in his book "guns, germs, and steel".

I higly recommend Letters from Thailand wriiten by Botan and translated by Susan Kepner. It's about the life of a Chinese family in Thailand. I have loved the book because of the rich cultures it identifies. I hope you will love it as much as I do.
There are many great Asian authors. We just have to keep on searching.

Has anybody read the Book "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne or "The Law of Attraction' by Mike Losier or 'Manifest your Destiny' by Dr. Wayne Dyer?

Hello Ctivnan,
Thanks.
I'll start it here. And hopefully, someone out there, might find this interesting.

Anyway, basically, these three books talk about the power of positive thinking;
the law of attraction - what you think of is what you get.
It teaches you about accepting your worth, your trusting yourself.
There are a lot of things you learn from these books.
But most especially, these books help you find ways to make your dreams come true.

And I am hoping that someone would tell us here how these books changed his/her life.

Hello rezh_timothy,
Yes, I believe that would be the same if you watched the one from the Youtube.
What do you think about it?

It's really amazing that in the book, "By the river..." Coelho puts so much emphasis on the Lady (is it Virgin Mary?) that heals and helps. I like that idea! ^^

I guess you can call me a bookworm, or at least I like being called a bookworm since that only means I read a lot and what's bad about that?

I read a lot of Stephen King novels I've read the entire Dark Tower Series, Hearts in Atlantis and Night Shift(I couldn't go to bed that night, I was 12 and I was screaming for my dad!). I've also read the following:

Game of thrones, A purpose driven life, the Night Shade series, To kill a mockingbird, Echo Burning, and a lot more books from libraries I can't even recognize anymore. I am also currently reading the Far Kingdoms.

I'm planning to read 100 Years of Soliude this summer. Now, I'm really excited about it because I've seen that a couple of you like and recommend it. :happy0141:

The only Nicholas Sparks I've read is A Walk to Remember. My gosh, it drove me to tears... I like the way he wrote that one. It's as if he was just there right in front of me and telling this story. I haven't seen the movie, though. I have seen the movie Message in a Bottle. I'm not sure if that was related to Nicholas Sparks' novel.

I wish I had much more time, so I could just read some more! ^^

I've also read The Little Prince, it's a blast :) its sort of classic, unique and moving i think to those who've read it would know that it'll be everyones favorite...

I've read books written by tom clancy my favorite author - hunt for red october, patriot games, rainbow six, without remorse, clear and present danger, the bear and the dragon; my favorite character of his is john kelly also known as john clark and ding chaves.

Books written by jeffrey archer - cane and abel, not a penny more not a penny less.

A book written by robert kiyosaki - rich dad, poor dad :inlove2:

I have a bad habit in reading which is I won't put down a book once I started reading it. This is the reason why I have slowed down reading now due to eye problems. My favorite authors and books are Noble House, Shogun, King Rat and all James Clavell books. Arthur Hailey's Moneychanger and Overload are still in my bookshelf. I also read and collected Robert Ludlum's books specially The Bourne series. I've read Jeffrey Archer's The Devil's Advocate and First Among Equals. These are but few and if I'll enumerate all books I've read this space may not be enough. Another bad habit of mine is I don't dispose the books I've read but unfortunately my children don't like my taste. They prefer J.K. Rowlings, Tolkien and the newer authors.

I like Og Mandino's "I am Natures Greatest Miracle".

Few weeks ago, I finished reading Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down, it's a novel about the four lives that were accidentally intertwined while queuing at Topper's House, a tower block notorious for people committing suicides.

The story involves the question not of death and dying but of whether it is even moral to continue living when all has lost the will to live.

(Hornby's work makes me realize and understand some more things about life...)

Last weekend...
I got a chance to look at one of my books I have been keeping in my shelf long time ago, John Irving's "A Widow for One Year"

It is a multi layered love story of astonishing emotional force. Both ribald and erotic.
A brilliant novel about the passage of time and the relentlessness of grief.

It's style is indeed different and it really amazed me.

Made me view the other form of love, loving, i dunno...

Indeed, that's one of the best novels I have read... :superhappy:

But I am more to reading funny novels like "Shopaholic" and "Can you keep a secret?" by Sophie Kinsella.. If you want to laugh your heart out try these! :)

I'm crazy about books, too! But these past few years I've read more reference books. And movies take much of my leisure time. Now, I've taken note on the books you guys listed here that I haven't read yet.

I've read Sophie's World, The Prayer of Jabez, The Little Prince, books of Robert Ludlum, Stephen King, Frederick Forsyth, Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, Agatha Christie, and Anne Rice.

I've also read Edgar Allan Poe works, Mario Puzo's The Sicilian, Isaac Asimov's The Collapsing Universe, Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Edith Hamilton's Mythology, Edilberto K. Tiempo's To Be Free, and F. Sionil Jose's The Pretenders.

I've read a handful of classics like Charles Dickens Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov, George Eliot's Silas Marner :c_o_o_l:, Bram Stoker's Dracula , Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, and Alexander Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo :approve: :applaud: .

Of course, I shouldn't forget Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series.

I have yet to read some books I've saved for the rainy days. :laugh1:

I never read books except my school’s text books, because reading books are boring thing to me, I learn everything by listening.
