Style Tips For Your 30s and Beyond

Expert Advice

Shannon McCarthy, Style Editor

In your 30
The 30s are typically about solidifying your place in the world, both personally and professionally. Many women will be juggling marriage, children and ramped-up responsibilities at work. You'll also notice your own individual style coming to the fore. You'll be choosier about fads and know what flatters and what falls flat. Avoid the more blatant sexiness of the previous decade, but don't dress dowdy. Show off your figure with belted waists, premium denim, sleek cocktail frocks and fitted short jackets. Your first really good business suit also may be a necessary indulgence, and a reward for all your hard work.

In your 40
Now's the time to pay close attention to your own style savvy and treat trends as a chance to accent your wardrobe instead of using them as a blueprint. You'll know what your fashion sense is when you realize what outfits make you feel both beautiful and comfortable. You'll certainly want to incorporate hot new styles into the mix, but your closet will also likely be filled with season-spanning classics like crisp white shirts, pencil skirts, flattering sheath dresses, well-tailored jackets and higher-end shoes. And don't forget the sensuality and ease of knits — wool blends, soft cottons and perhaps even fine cashmere.

In your 50
Since 50 is officially the new 30, the idea of "dressing your age" takes on a whole new meaning. Forget drab, shapeless duds and embrace sexy sophistication. Start by re-thinking color. Deep, gorgeous jewel tones are more flattering than primary colors, and solid neutrals like black, camel and navy make a great backdrop for a hip shot of bright red or yellow on a handbag or heels. Show off your shape, too — not by exposing more skin but rather by wearing soft stretch fabrics that skim the body. Look for well-made clothes in quality fabric. Buy less, but better.

In your 60

There's a freedom from caring about convention now. Your style is most decidedly your own. As in the previous decade, solid workmanship and the finest fabrics you can afford trumps flyaway fads. You can teach those newbies a thing or two about elegance and refinement. Streamlined, uncluttered looks are best, with one bold touch — a muted metallic blouse under a neutral-hued pantsuit, an element of animal print, a pair of unexpected and gorgeous low-heeled black boots, to seal the deal. And a classic khaki trench coat looks more smashing on you now than it would've twenty years ago.

The Biggest Fashion Shopping Mistakes

Don't talk yourself into an outfit that isn't flattering to your frame. There are only two kinds of clothes in this world. Clothes that flatter you and clothes that don't and avoid the latter regardless of how popular and trendy they are.
It is one thing to go shopping with your girlfriends because that can be very social and enjoyable but keep in mind don't shop with a competitive friend because she will cajole you into buying more and possibly unflattering items weather or not you need it.
If you are shopping for a cocktail (event) dress remember to bring your shoes. That way if you need to have in-store alterations you will be all set.
If you need to power shop remember to bring a list. This can help focus your attention and keep you on task.
Nothing good will come from buying uncomfortable shoes regardless of how fabulous they are.
Don't buy something you don't need because it is a fantastic sale price. I know we have all done this but it is a waste of money and closet space.
Don't buy on impulse. Ask yourself the following questions when deciding if to buy. Do I need this? Does it fit with my lifestyle or wardrobe? Where am I going to wear this? If you are still undecided then put it on hold and if you are still thinking about it at the end of the day -buy it.

Fashion Shopping tips for you

Spend money on great shoes because they can make or break an outfit. You can even wear them with jeans and look fabulous!
Buy items that fit your lifestyle. If you know you are going to live in your jeans then it is ok to spend $150 a pair especially if you had to try on dozens to find the right fit. Buy clothes to suit your lifestyle.
Spend money on staples on shoes, bags, a cashmere sweater, a black pair of pants and skimp on belts, socks, trendy tops, scarves, hats and sunglasses..
Before you shop know what you own. Make a point to go through your closet at the beginning of every season.
Invest in undergarments because the right foundation garments can make everything you own look better

HOW TO HIDE A TUMMY BULGE?
It’s happened to everyone before- when you pull your jeans (http://styletips101.com/fashion/sexy-fall-jeans.html) all the way to the top and you realize there’s something spilling over- and it’s you! It’s ok don’t worry all you need to know is what to wear and what not to wear!
Since short tees aren’t fashionable anymore, you’re in luck! There are tons of tops you can choose from to hide that bulge. Choose something with a shirttail hem, which is fashioned to ride low in the front, camouflaging the stomach, but also curves up at the hips, giving you a slim silhouette (http://styletips101.com/fashion-tips/the-secrets-to-looking-slimmer.html).
So what should you stay away from? Tight-fitting tops and dresses (http://styletips101.com/fashion/fabulous-party-dresses.html), as well as jackets (http://styletips101.com/fashion/tailored-jackets.html). Anything above the stomach is obviously a no-no.
Also, stay away from modern materials that are shiny and tight-they are your biggest enemy.

Women's Fashion Tips and Style Ideas

Fashion Tips Buy Clothes to suit Your Shape

Layout your clothes before putting them on and check the proportions. Juggle jackets, scarves & belts to re-arrange the clothes to get the look you want.

Thinner fabrics are more slimming.
Tops and bottoms of one color will make you look thinner.
Wear clothes that fit.
Wearing too large clothes will exaggerate your figure not hide it.
Avoid belts unless you have a slim waist.
Use accessories carefully.

You can make your wardrobe impressive with mix and match jewelry (http://www.bestincosmetics.com/beauty-tips/women-fashion.htm#).
Shoes depend less on you body shape than you height. Do not buy clothes on impulse. Plan before you buy a blouse or pants. Be somewhat scientific about shopping, consider your body type, and colors.
Think in terms of outfits when you shop, and be practical. When you buy a new dress, be sure you have shoes and other accessories to go with it. Maybe a jacket or scarf (http://www.bestincosmetics.com/beauty-tips/women-fashion.htm#) to wear over it to give it a different look.
Clothes Styles and Body Shapes

High collars shortens necks.

Tight tops with short sleeves and breast pocket is detracting from your figure. Shoes with straps shortens your legs. The torso can be shortened or narrowed with seam lines, belts, bows, and collars.
A short necklace (http://www.bestincosmetics.com/beauty-tips/women-fashion.htm#) can shorten your neck.
A scarf or belt that hangs down toward the legs will make the legs appear longer. Knitted texture, lace, floras, prints, and plaids can assist in creating an illusion.
Thicker vertical lines in plaids lengthens and slims.
Wear a larger print where you want people to look and smaller print where you do not want them to look.
An all over print can camouflage figure problems, but prints here and there can create a fuller you.
Prints around the neck and over the shoulder can make your shoulders appear wider. Just wear prints near the parts of your figure's assets, because they are usually more eye catching than a solid color.
When buying pants be sure they fit well. Defects are emphasized in a pair of pants that may go unnoticed in a skirt.

Petite women.

Petite women need to keep clothes in line, slim narrow alligator belts (http://www.trafalgar-leather.com/). A slight contrast in colors and fitted lines will flatter you endlessly. Also stay with fabrics that are soft and flowing that fits well. Over powering prints should be avoided.
Tall women.
Tall women can indulge in wide belts, avoid tight clothes and skirts that are to short or to long. Beauty expert Stephanie Faber recommends tall women play down their waist by wearing their blouses over the pants and skirts and avoid tight belts.
Hip heavy triangle woman.

A hip heavy triangle and round full figured women can use clothes with vertical lines to make an up and down illusion. V-necks and skirts with slits up the sides are also good. Clothes with small padded shoulders should be chosen . Too big of pads will make you look like a foot ball player. Wear long tops that go passed your hips. Choose jackets, tailored suits (http://www.bestincosmetics.com/beauty-tips/women-fashion.htm#) and shirtwaist dresses with straight, classic cuts. Lighter colors on top can be worn, this brings eyes up. Wear dark stockings and avoid patterns. Select vertical, fluid patterns and avoid bulky fabrics. Adopt the just below the knee look in dresses and skirts. Choose accessories close to the same color clothes you are wearing including shoes. This gives your body an unbroken slimmer look. Avoid very wide pinafore skirts. Stay with straight or Aline skirts.
Top heavy woman.

The top heavy body types need to choose long jackets without shoulder pads. Do not wear blouses with fancy details and ruffles. Do not wear clingy fabrics on top, choose darker colors on top. Do not wear tops that are to light. Tops with dolman or raglan sleeves and ones that fit loose and slims down to hug the hips and waist are good. Wear pants or skirts that are pleated to bring the eye down. Choose thin materials like cotton, or cotton jersey. One color dressing will also be thinning. Flat shoes are best unless you are short, then wear heels. If your legs are in good shape shorter hem lengths will draw attention away from your top.
Rectangular type woman

The rectangular type can accentuate curves by wearing jackets or tops that hug the waist, feminine thick sweaters over skirts or pants. Use patterns in your tops or bottoms to add dimension. Round out the neckline with necklaces, scarves and other accessories, and use shoulder pads.

SPICE OUT YOUR OUTFIT WITH SCARVES

With the weather suddenly chiller, many women are busy going shopping to refurbish their wardrobe with up-to-date fashion items appropriate for the weather.
Yet there's an easier solution to keeping your style trendy without having to buy a new coat or a bag, according to Satu Kurki, the head designer for the Finnish scarf brand, Marja Kurki.
"Wearing scarves is the quickest way to transform your style to go with the latest trend," said Kurki in an interview with The Korea Herald.
Rather than buying bags or clothes -- Kurki mentioned an orange leather bag as an example -- that are usually more expensive but go out of fashion sooner, it is safer to choose a scarf that is less costly but has more uses, she said.
"A scarf is not an item that is highly trend-sensitive. You can put on a scarf you bought years ago and try mix-and-matching it with any of your old outfit," she added.

Marja Kurki has been specializing in scarves and ties since being established in 1976 by Marja Kurki, Satu's mother-in-law. The company has grown over the years making entries in over 35 countries. It is now run by its CEO, Tapani Kurki, Satu's husband, who took the lead in 1991. The brand is well-known for its unique and elegant designs that are inspired by the beautiful nature of Finland. Products are made of not only high-quality silk and cashmere but eco-friendly materials.
The maker became more popular in the industry over the years with a number of well-known female leaders as well as fashion icons who often wore their products. They are late Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton and Madeleine Albright, a former U.S. Secretary of state.
Kurki currently leads the design sector of the company with eight other designers presenting collections comprised of scarves, ties and other small accessories twice a year.
Although the main inspirations for their creations come from nature, every season, the company does not forget to keep up with the vogue in Paris or Milan, two of world's fashion meccas.
"We try to go with colors that the world's fashion industry promotes for a particular season. For this season, they are purple and brown tones, which are pretty much the typical fall colors," she said.
Marja Kurki made its entry to Korea in March. The brand established multiple stores so far in cities including Seoul, Busan and Changwon, some of which are at Lotte Department Stores.
"We decided to enter the Korean market because we realized that Korean women are very fashionable and trendy," Kurki said. The brand intends to offer working women here in their 20s and 30s with its creative designs, she added. :DANCER:
