Hi folks!

As we are presently arranging the courts and schedules of our group's badminton activities, I am thinking of posting this thread for the benefit of the beginners in this sport. I was once a novice with badminton, and I was lost when it comes to which equipment do I need to get for the game. I'm sharing my personal experiences with you guys in this thread so you may have an idea on what you will need when playing this sport.

1. SHOES - Badminton shoes usually have rubber gum soles for superb traction on court. Badminton players do a series of fast lateral movements and these shoes are excellent for that purpose. Usually, courts with taraflex mats require players to wear rubber gum shoes while playing since other rubber shoes either damage or puncture the taraflex mats. Also as an experience, I have seen players who use normal rubber shoes and get injured while playing (shoes slip or slide on the rubber surface, ankle sprains, torn calf or hamstring muscles, etc.). I highly recommend investing in a pair of gum sole shoes. FYI, here's a link on what gum-soled shoes look like:

There are other brands of shoes which are cheaper like Adidas, Yonex, Wilson, etc. which have the same gum soles as Mizuno. There's a shop called sports warehouse discount store located in Club 650 Libis and in Market Market Taguig which sells these shoes for a lower price. You can check them out when you go to these places.

2. RACKET (or RACQUET) - The racquet is the most important equipment to be considered in playing badminton. In buying one, you should consider what type of player are you. If you are the heavy smasher, you may opt for the heavy ones. If you are the drop and smart player, you may go with the light ones. Among the brands that you can choose from is RSL, Carlton, Yonex, Head, and Wilson. The budget for a standard racket would be from P2-2,500. The more expensive ones may set you back as far as P8-10,000.

Well, these are the most important equipment that you should consider in playing the sport of badminton. The rest (shirt, shorts, etc.) you can decide whatever you want to wear.

Hope this post helps our members here. Thanks!

Just an update.

If you are on a tight budget for shoes, I would suggest you look for badminton shoes at The Sports Warehouse store located in Club 650 Libis, and at the 4th level of Market! Market!. They sell original sporting goods at warehouse prices. You may want to look for either Wilson or Adidas badminton shoes. I have a Wilson which I bought for 1,250 before.

I was a bit concerned because the pair of shoes that cmo showed me was pretty expensive.

I'll check these stores out!!!

I'm already excited to learn and play badminton! :DANCER:

Thanks again for this opportunity, Evona!! :yey:

Evona, this is great! As a beginner, I don't need to buy those high end shoes yet. I will also check this out this weekend.

You're welcome! Sir CMO might have shown you Mizuno, an expensive pair but worth the price. I suggest to get a decently priced badminton shoes before you switch to an intermediate brand.

Feb. 3 is a good day to start the games. I'm voting for Feb. 3 to start.

Comments, anyone?

Finally, I have my equipment for badminton: racket and shoes.

The racket I got is Carlcon/Power Blade-tension 24. Yonex is much more expensive and maybe I will buy next time. I got free thread and installation plus the racket case.

For the shoes, I looked for the ones suggested by Evona but could not find cheap ones. Adidas and Wilson for my size were out of stock. Yonex shoes were available at very discounted price but again, no size available for me. So, I decided to buy Nike shoes at discounted price.

So, now I have to make myself ready with lots of stretching exercises and eat lots of fruit!!!!
