Asia Disasters: Two Urgent Appeals launched for 8 million Swiss francs
3 October 2009
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is seeking more than 8 million Swiss francs (http://donate.ifrc.org/) in international assistance as it responds simultaneously to major emergencies across Asia. Two preliminary emergency appeals will provide essential support to relief and recovery operations in Philippines and Viet Nam. Additional Emergency Appeals are under development to support Red Cross National Societies in Samoa and Indonesia.
In the Philippines, as the Philippines National Red Cross provides humanitarian assistance following Typhoon Ketsana and prepares for Typhoon Parma, 3.08 million Swiss francs (USD 2.98 million/Euro 2.5 million) are being sought to help 100,000 people over the next nine months. The focus of emergency assistance will be for distribution of non-food relief items, water and sanitation interventions, health and medical provisions, along with longer-term support for recovery and disaster risk reduction programmes.
In Viet Nam, a preliminary emergency appeal seeks 4.9 million Swiss francs (USD 4.75 million/Euro 3.25 million) to provide food and non-food items for distribution, water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, shelter for displaced populations and capacity building for the Viet Nam Red Cross and its volunteers. Red Cross Red Crescent relief and recovery efforts aim to support 210,000 people over the next twelve months.
“In the Philippines and Viet Nam, volunteers have played a vital role in saving lives, but international assistance is needed to support their actions to continue carrying out relief and recovery,” said Michael Annear, Disaster Management coordinator for the IFRC in Asia and Pacific. “Donations to this appeal will help to meet immediate needs of vulnerable people and will help to further strengthen National Societies in the face of future disasters.”
In the Philippines, more than 2.5 million people were impacted by Typhoon Ketsana, with 7,000 homes having been destroyed or heavily damaged. Nearly 700,000 people have sought refuge in 726 emergency shelters.
In Viet Nam, an estimated 3 million people have been affected by Typhoon Ketsana and related flooding. 150,000 people remain displaced with more than 200,000 homes having been damaged during the storm.
