Irish priest, 78, taken hostage 'by Muslim gunmen' in Philippines

A 78-year-old Irish priest has been abducted by heavily armed men from the garden of his house in the Phillipines.

Six gunmen dragged the Rev. Michael Sinnott into a van in front of his horrified aides inside the Columban House compound in Pagadian City on Mindano island in the south of the country.

Local police chief Angelo Sunglao said: 'They could not do anything because the abductors had powerful weapons.'

Muslim guerrillas have been fighting for an independent state in the southern Philippines region for decades and have been known to target and kidnap foreigners, including priests.

The Columban regional director, Patrick O'Donoghue, said he was worried because Sinnott has a heart condition and was not carrying his medication when he was taken.

The abductors took Sinnott away by sea on a motorboat toward a town called Tukuran.
'He's a very robust man for his age, but he has had a heart by-pass four years ago,' Fr O'Donoghue said from his home in Manila.

'The concern that I would have is that if he does not have his medication this would be very serious thing for him, especially given the shock.

'It must be a very shocking thing to find yourself bundled into a car and taken away.'

The van was later found abandoned and burned near the Catholic mission house.

Police and troops were mobilised to search the area.

Al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf militants and insurgents from the larger Moro Islamic Liberation Front have a presence in the vast Zamboanga peninsula.

Sinnott's group, the Missionary Society of St. Columban, confirmed his abduction, saying he was taking an evening stroll in the convent's garden when he was taken by the gunmen. The group appealed for prayers for his safe recovery.

Sinnott has worked in the Philippines for decades. The group said he was first assigned in the southern Philippines between 1957-66, then returned in 1976.

He has been involved in a school for handicapped children since 1998.

Several priests have been kidnapped in recent years in the region.

Mostly recently, an Italian priest, Giancarlo Bossi, was kidnapped allegedly by members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Abu Sayyaf in nearby Zamboanga Sibugay province in June 2007. He was freed after 39 days.

The rebel front denied any involvement. The government then denied speculation that a ransom was paid to win Bossi's release.

Pagadian City is a hilly city on the island of Mindanao

The 11,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has been engaged in on-and-off peace talks with the government, has denied any involvement in kidnappings for ransom or any alliance with the smaller and more violent Abu Sayyaf.

The Abu Sayyaf is believed to have about 400 fighters.

U.S. and Philippine security officials say it has received funds from al-Qaida and is suspected of sheltering militants from the larger Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.

Wanted MILF leader offers help to locate abducted Irish priest

A Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) field commander on Tuesday denied any participation in the abduction of a Columban missionary in Pagadian City last Sunday night.

Abdurahman Macapaar alias Kumander Bravo, who is among the three MILF leaders wanted by the government for leading the attack on civilian communities in Central Mindanao last year, even offered to help look for Irish priest Fr. Michael Sinnott.

The 79-year-old Sinnott was abducted at about 7:30 p.m. from his home at the Missionary Society of St. Columban compound in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur last Sunday.

“We do not have anything to do with the kidnapping of the priest, we are ready to help look for ways that the priests be released soonest," Bravo said in an article on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site (http://www.cbcpnews.com/).

Earlier, MILF vice chairman for political affairs Ghadzali Jaafar said the MILF is watching closely the developments in Sinnott's abduction. He branded the kidnapping as a "cowardly act."

Sinnott, who will turn 80 on December 19, has been in the Philippines since 1976. He has served in a variety of pastoral and administrative roles. He has been spotted (http://www.gmanews.tv/regions) three times after his abduction, according to the military.

The government is already coordinating with the joint Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) in Mindanao to facilitate the immediate and safe rescue of Sinnott.

“We told our CCCH under direction of our negotiating panel with the MILF to touch base with their counterparts because it’s very important that all hands should be on board to lead the safe recovery of Father Sinot," said Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita on Tuesday.

The CCCH is monitoring the implementation of ceasefire between the government and the MILF in preparation for the resumption of the peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, a newly formed task force tracking down Sinnott has given local residents in Mindanao its hotlines for leads on his and his abductors' whereabouts.

Task Force Sinnott spokesman Allan Molde admitted they need the public's help in tracking down the missionary, who armed men abducted Sunday night in Pagadian City.

“As of now we don’t have contacts from Fr. Sinnott’s abductors." Molde said in an interview on Catholic-run dxDD radio in Mindanao. Excerpts of the interview were posted Tuesday evening on the CBCP site.

He said anyone with leads could contact the task force at 0916-619-0343; 0917-972-2194; 0928-521-4003 and 0917-324-9103. - GMANews.TV

Abducted Irish priest spotted three times - AFP

The Philippine military on Tuesday bared at least three sightings of abducted Irish priest Michael Sinnott – the first proof of life since the 79-year-old missionary was abducted last Sunday in southern Philippines.

Maj. Gen. Ben Dolorfino, chief of the military’s Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said government troops and police forces are now cordoning off the area where the victim and his abductors were spotted.

"Kahapon hanggang ngayon may tatlong reported sightings tayo. Hindi pa namin i-disclose yung place but the effort of the Armed Forces of the Philippines saka the Philippine National Police is to contain them in that particular area," he said.

(Since Monday we’ve had three sightings of Sinnott, but we will not reveal the area so as not to jeopardize our operations. Our mission now is to contain them in one particular area.)

He said the operation involves checkpoints and at least four Navy vessels to limit the movement of the kidnappers.

“We have four Philippine Navy watercrafts cordoning from the sea. On the ground, the AFP have put checkpoints," Dolorfino said.

Sinnott was abducted (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/174394/gunmen-seize-irish-priest-in-pagadian-city) at about 7:30 p.m. from his home at the Missionary Society of St. Columban compound in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

The PNP on Monday formed Task Force Sinnott upon orders (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/174434/arroyo-orders-pnp-rescue-abducted-irish-priest) from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Malacañang wants Sinnott released immediately as he was reportedly suffering from a heart condition. He reportedly underwent a heart bypass operation recently.

Dolorfino also said the military is strengthening its intelligence capability to identify the "key personalities" behind the abduction.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said it is “highly probable" that the Abu Sayyaf and the Special Operations Group of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF-SOG) were responsible for the abduction.

“It’s highly probable [that it’s] Abu Sayyaf or MILF-SOG… [the] same groups have undertaken similar kidnap activities," he said.

Ermita, however, said the government is still in the middle of its investigation on the incident. He said the investigation includes determining whether or not Sinnott was abducted for ransom purposes.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), for its part, appealed to the abductors of Sinnott to release him safely, noting his health condition.

“[We join] the friends of Fr. Sinnott and other sectors of society in appealing to the abductors for his safe and immediate release given his advance age and health condition," the DFA said.

DFA spokesperson Ed Malaya refused to comment on the effect of this recent kidnapping to the already tarnished security image of the country.

In June 2007, Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi was snatched by some 10 armed men in Payao town in Zamboanga Sibugay, after he officiated mass at his parish church there. He was released on the eve his 40th day in captivity in Karumatan, Lanao del Norte. Suspected rogue members of the MILF were said to be behind the kidnapping. - with Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV
