I was wondering whether the expressions, cut off and cut down mean the same thing?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

:thankyou: :LOVE0056:

I will check the dictionary.

If I follow the logic, cut off, seems to permanently terminate something.

and cut down, sounds, to limit to a less amount of something. Like cut down on sugar, chocolate, fat.

This is just a guess at the moment....

Hey now cmo..:hey:

Quite true...Cut down does limit the intake of something, as in caloric intake or spending - it can also mean to shorten or abbreviate something.

To cut down is also to kill or strike dead: "The deer was cut down by the hunter's bullet."

Or to raze, fell, level, flatten, smash, steamroll or bulldoze something.

While cut off is:

Limits or boundaries; the end - "The cut off point is fifteen."
Shortcut - A road veering off, a bee-line, the shortest way to a point.

Also to excise something - cut out, cancel, write off, eradicate, root out, wipe or stamp out - etc.
and to kill, put an end to, take from, dispossess, exclude, separate, sever and interrupt something or someone.

These words have many different meanings - How it's said and the context in which it's delivered will give one the meaning being conveyed by the speaker.

I hope this helps a little...:)

just to say it in my own words:

cut down means to downsize or remake into smaller size; while
cut off is terminate.

As in:

I finally managed to cut down on my sugar consumption after having been told by my doctor that it was a very helpful way of losing unwanted weight.

Cut this talk off!! It would lead us to nowhere.

:thanks:
