Hiya Neeruam!
I have a great website for you! This will help you in teaching phonetics. :yey:
http://www.antimoon.com/how/pronunc-soundsipa.htm
What's great about this site is that you can listen and learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which is necessary to learn for anyone venturing in teaching and learning English, especially pronunciation. Through the IPA you will be able to read the accurate pronunciation of words from your dictionary. :first:
Now to answer your question:
The long vowels are the ones with colons /a:/ as in 'a' in father.
The ones without a colon is short /e/ as in bed.
If you have any more questions, just feel free to ask. I'll be happy to help out! I specialize in teaching phonology! I just love it!
Good luck to you and all the best! :dance3:

I found out that the phonetics in Merriam-Webster's Dictionary is the easiest to teach.
You have long a, short a, ae combination, long e, short e, long i, short i, and so on and so forth.
