MANILA - Nokia Philippines on Tuesday said it will replace potentially hazardous cellphone chargers after confirming that the chargers could give users an electric shock.
Nokia Corporate Communications Manager Nikka Abes said only three charger models - AC-3E, AC-3U and AC-4U - manufactured between April and October this year would be included in the charger exchange program.

She said the plastic covers of the affected chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electrical shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket.

"Some of these chargers were shipped to the Philippine market so we are asking users to check the 26-digit serial number and production code of their chargers to see if they are covered," she told abs-cbnNEWS.com. Some 14 million of the defective chargers were shipped worldwide, according to Nokia.

Abes said the defective chargers are not used for smartphones and Nokia's high-end phones. She added that AC-3E and AC-3U chargers purchased before June 15, 2009 and AC-4U chargers purchased before April 13, 2009 are not within scope of the program.

3-step process
Chargers within the scope of the exchange program can be easily identified through the following three step process.

Step one – Identify the charger model number to determine if it is within scope of the program. Eligible models are AC-3E, AC-3U and AC-4U. If the charger model is not listed, it is not within scope of the program and no further action is required.

Step two – Determine if the charger was manufactured by BYD. If your charger label has the letters “BYD” it may be within the scope of the http://english-coffee.com/images/spacer.gifprogram. If BYD is not identified on your charger label, it is not within the scope of the program and no further action is required.

Step three – Identify charger production date code. If you own the AC-3E or AC-3U, and your charger model contains production codes between “925” and “932” it is within the scope of the program and should be exchanged for a free replacement charger. If any other code is listed it is not within scope of the program and no further action is required.

If you own the AC-4U, and your charger model contains production codes between “916” and “943” it is within the scope of the program and should be exchanged for a free replacement charger.
