1. Laundry - Separate the whites and darks; put the clothes gently in the washer (http://socyberty.com/education/four-things-to-teach-kids-before-they-go-to-college/#)– do NOT pack them in. Put the correct amount of soap in according to the package. Press the buttons for the correct settings. Example: Normal wash, perma press setting for normal wash.
Dryer – hang clothes on hangers, put underware and socks in dryer for the correct time – depends on the machine.

2. How to clean a toilet – Get a toilet brush and a plunger. Know how to plunge it, if it gets stopped up. Use the brush once/week. Put some cleaner on the brush or in the toilet. and clean all around the bowl, under the rim. Scrub it. Flush. Take a rag wet it, put some cleaner on and wipe down the entire outside of the toilet.
3. How to balance a checkbook- Even though there are software programs to help with this now, it helps to know how to do it manually. This makes it much easier to use the software. Take the checks written, subtract from the starting balance in the account, and you have the current balance. (the simplified method). Balance this against the account statement. If there are any differences check: was an amount written incorrectly? Was one check not cashed? Think of all the possibilities that could happen with a check.

4. Cooking (http://socyberty.com/education/four-things-to-teach-kids-before-they-go-to-college/#)- Know how to cook some basic foods. Scrambled eggs – break each egg (usually 3) separately into a bowl, beat together with a fork. Heat fry pan with butter or a small amount of oil. Pour the eggs in and keep mixing until done. Egg salad – hard boil the eggs by putting raw eggs in a pan of cool water. Heat until boiling, then simmer about 5 minutes. Turn off heat. Rinse in cold water, peel, mash, add mayonaise, chopped celery, chopped onions (http://socyberty.com/education/four-things-to-teach-kids-before-they-go-to-college/#), relish or whatever to taste.[/COLOR]
Other cooking items – take a class to learn more interesting food preparation.
You wont have to be afraid to send your kids out into the world if they have at least these skills.
