THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 2008 | OFW

Davao City -- The Philippine government is working on a partnership with destination countries of overseas Filipino workers to share not only in productive capacities but on education and training. This will make OFWs fully productive assets who can contribute meaningfully wherever they work.

In a press statement Department of Labor Secretary Arturo D. Brion said the OFWs are contributing to the economic development of their host countries based on the education and training they acquired in the Philippines.

Brion said joint efforts in the continuous training and education of OFWs shall facilitate skills and jobs matching in destination countries.

A discussion was held on establishing series of partnership between countries of origin and destination designed to leverage temporary labor mobility towards fostering development.

The partnership he said shall also focus on enhancing knowledge between and among countries of origin and destination in the areas of labor market trends, skills profiles, temporary contractual workers and remittances, and flows, and their interplay with development in the region.

He also said that a framework towards comprehensive approach in managing the entire cycle of temporary contractual mobility that fosters the mutual interests of countries of origin and destination should be developed.

The Philippines he said already does the management of labor mobility as the country now provides a whole cycle of protection that starts before the OFWs are deployed to the countries abroad and upon their return to the country.
