Default Anti-littering campaign starts Sept 16

MANILA, Philippines- Litterbugs, beware. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will start re-implementing Regulation Number 96-009, otherwise known as the "Anti Littering Law", effective September 16. The Anti-Littering Law penalizes people who indiscriminately dump garbage that clog up waterways. Under the law, all business establishments are required to maintain the cleanliness of their frontages and immediate surroundings. Violators wil be issued with Environmental Violation Receipt (EVR) and corresponding fines ranging from P500 to P1,000. Those who cannot afford to pay the administrative fines will be required to render community service. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that the public is expected to actively cooperate since the aim of the drive is beneficial to all. “We will be going around the LGUs and conduct information and education campaign for public awareness before we start our actual apprehension,” Tolentino said

For those litterbugs, be aware that you throw your trash because you don't need and like it anymore, same goes for those whom you met everyday on the road!

It's really high time that we do this. It's not just because it clogs up our drainage systems, but simply because it's what people should have been doing in the first place. It's really annoying to see people throwing trash practically anywhere. I was riding this jeepney where a woman was eating a bunch of lanzones. She had a plastic bag for her lanzones, but she kept throwing the peelings out of the jeepney window! What kind of attitude is that exactly? I really couldn't comprehend why people just can't find a trash can. It's very easy. In my case, I just stuff everything into my pocket or bag until I find a decent can where I can throw everything. That's a very simple thing to do. I don't know why others had to consider public places as a big trash can of sorts. Even more upsetting is the fact that we are setting an example to children.

Sorry for ranting, but this policy is long overdue. ^^

Makati presses anti-littering drive

MAKATI CITY – Litter bugs beware!
The Makati City government has no plans of relaxing its anti-littering drive that has been implemented without letup since the enactment of the Makati Solid Waste Management Code through City Ordinance No. 2003-095.
A t of the Makati Department of Environmental Services (DES) to Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay, Jr. showed that a total 3,620 litter bugs were apprehended in the first six months of the year.
DES officer-in-charge Ulysses Orienza said the offenders were caught in different parts of the city by local environmental enforcers during anti-littering operations from January to June of this year.
He said out of the 3,620 caught indiscriminately throwing candy or food wrappers, cigarette butts and other waste materials, 392 were Makati residents while the rest were transients, mostly city workers from other localities.
“We have continued our citywide anti-littering drive in line with the directive of Mayor Junjun Binay to intensify the environmental advocacy program of the city government that is geared towards climate change mitigation and adaptation,” Orienza said.
In its report, DES said that the number of apprehensions has decreased compared to 4,048 in the same period last year.
Orienza said the reduction can be attributed to greater awareness of residents and the general public of the strict anti-littering policy of the city, and a better appreciation of the importance of maintaining clean and litter-free surroundings to prevent the occurrence of disastrous floods, landslides, epidemics and other hazards to the lives and properties of people.
The DES chief said all apprehended litterbugs were issued citation tickets and slapped with a fine of P1,000. Violators are usually given three days to settle their penalties. Should they fail to show up within the prescribed period, they will be served with a summons and subsequently charged in court.

ANTI- LITTERING DRIVE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Awesome! That was the first thing that I have said after I heard the news about this so called "Anti-Littering Drive". This means that people in the country will be punished or will pay 500 pesos to 1000 pesos if they got caught littering in public places.

This is a very good way to make this country more inviting especially here in Metro Manila. As a student, I have seen a lot of not-so-good things here especially the trash or candy wrappers all over the street. Well that is a big NO NO!

Kudos to MMDA who are working hard to make this Anti-Litering Drive possible! Please don't use the money that you will be collecting for your own goods. Work hard and a reward will be given to you in the end!

Make this country clean and inviting like Singapore! Well that is one of dreams for our country. A refreshing and relaxing city.

Anyone who throws garbage in any inappropriate place should be shot on the spot.

Yes. They should be shot with recycled water guns loaded with garbage juice. ^^ Then things will come full circle.

What a way to deal with litterbugs.

But seriously, we have been dealing with laws and ordinances here and there and they are dealing with us. However, none has come up to every honest citizen's expectation. We only need self-discipline and self-regulation. Laws are ineffective unless self-discipline starts flowing in the blood of every Filipino. How about a transfusion?
