The professor of infectious diseases Sotiris Tsiodras described as “critical” the next 15 days, regarding the control of the epidemic, during today’s briefing of the Ministry of Health for the coronaio.
Specifically, the professor stated that if we continue to consider ourselves as potential carriers of corona and continue to adhere to hand hygiene measures and distances and if we voluntarily limit our many contacts, our gatherings in crowded places. “We will have less risk of resurgence and widespread dispersal from Monday when contacts increase.”
It is important to remain vigilant and to diagnose the new cases of the disease in time with the increased laboratory testing and the immediate intervention with the tracking of the contacts from the new cases, he pointed out.
“We still do not have all the answers, we will continue to monitor the picture of the disease every day and if we need to intervene, we will intervene to control the epidemic” before it takes on dimensions, stressed S. Tsiodras.
Asked what would determine a new lockdown, he said it would be the active production number of R0 “which is currently well below 1”, as he explained and added that other indicators would be used along the way to assess the epidemic, which is related to the strengths of the Health system.
He made special reference to the marginal positive tests but also to the tests that show a prolonged positive test, he said that as a result of a study in South Korea, “it seems that they concern dead parts of the virus” which remain in the body. But, as he explained, this new study “reassures us, as it seems that after the 10th day, the chances of transmitting the virus are greatly reduced,” he said, adding that the 14-day quarantine is sufficient as it is strict.
