Konstantinos Angelopoulos and I had lost count of our meetings during the #menoumespiti period. Meeting place, the Zoom platform – sometimes some more. Both of us, each from his own home, “caught” early “stall” by participating in a video conference.
Konstantinos has started to go down to the office of the company in which he works in the center of Athens and our digital meetings have begun to thin out. In any case, neither of us has given up, nor much more intends to give up the habit of digital communication that has proved unimaginably useful in the difficult days of unspeakable uncertainty. Always the reason for Zoom and the other platforms that were channels of communication, reflection and dialogue.
A few days ago – in the new phase of our lives called “Staying safe” – talking to Konstantinos about the common heritage of #menoumespiti I “pinched” an idea that should not be lost… The idea had to do with something that was missing as an application from the platforms – a tool that works as a recorder of practices in a video conference. Such ideas from an uninterrupted pool of creative thinking will be present and claim their application in the new environment formed in a dynamic balance between the physical space and our digital presence.
In other words, the more the sense of security is established among citizens, the more it will be sought to define the new content of the concept of “Performance”, a concept combined with Energy and Efficiency in all areas of social and economic life – starting at home and family and continuing with the friendly and professional environment to get to business and public affairs in general.
Konstantinos Angelopoulos, originally from Livadia and living in Athens with his wife and three sons, is a mechanical engineer at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a master’s degree in Business Research from the London School of Economics. In recent years he has been the vice-president of the Dialogue Community “Synthesis”.
Attention to the application of “health shields”
Konstantinos believes that the feeling of security will be further strengthened by our constant commitment to the application of “health shields” at all levels of our lives. All these new expressions of #menoumespiti’s common heritage at the business and work level could function as “health shields” in this transitional period. He insists that “e-commerce is a good solution to the fear or embarrassment of physical presence” and believes that remote work and education as well as teleconferencing platforms facilitate and shape new data, and will need to be used with more intensity in the next period.
But, let us again bring to the fore a crucial question that requires answers or at least at the first initial level creative approaches: “What is considered or what is safe and effective for the citizens for their lives during the Covid-19 era?”.
Tradition and as a repository of practices
Dr. Faye Makandasi, head of research at the organization DNEEOSIS (an independent, non-profit research organization that, among other things, produces studies and research on important issues of our time, seeking to offer specific policy proposals), is rushing to the temple. different framework for approaching the relationship between security and performance. The baton of speech to her: “A month ago, Dianeosis presented the findings of the research” How Greeks live in the pandemic “. In this multidimensional survey, our fellow citizens were placed, among other things, on the major issue of trust in institutions, highlighting the primacy of the tripartite family – armed forces – scientists/technocrats, while the previously remaining trusted non-governmental institutions. Therefore, it seems that collective intelligence, as safe and efficient, in the way of dealing with the diverse demands of life, institutions that have proven their worth over time.
Both the family and the armed forces are traditional institutions that are timeless. By generalizing slightly, tradition also functions as a repository of practices, proving its value in various kinds of crises, and showing resilience and adaptability. Despite any reflexes of rupture, tradition deserves to be considered as a sufficient mechanism for stopping crises. In addition, a dimension that emerges primarily through the recognition of experts is the salutation of local knowledge as a distillate of scientifically sound research efforts, through which an objective view of the unknown is evolutionarily formed. It is true that in many cases the experiment, which is a basic scientific practice, can lead to a rupture with tradition or even too costly errors. However, macroscopically, the significant successes of the scientific community (for example, vaccines, utilization of renewable energy sources, telecommunications, etc.) cannot be questioned.
Finally, past abysmal low confidence in state institutions and their current improved image shows that leadership that has open channels of communication with other institutions, a low degree of intervention and quick reflexes can help citizens feel safe. ”
Rearrangements in psyche, perceptions and priorities
Minos Moussis has a long successful career in finance (banks, insurance companies, etc.). Today, among other things, he is a founding partner of SYNERGON Partners, a boutique company that provides specialized business strategy consulting services. In the old Anglo-Saxon sense of the word, Moses is a thinker in the public sphere. With the exact quality of my old friend, I asked him to help me think about the days. He responded. The following text is his own: “Research on the pandemic, both during strict restrictive measures and in the phase of gradual return, shows that there are significant reshuffles in the psyche, perceptions and priorities of people. A key issue, the outcome of which is still unknown, is whether such changes will remain and be integrated or blurred and overcome in the long run. The concept of security, that is, everyone’s perception of what makes them feel safe, is clearly different.
From an almost given meaning in the old every day, it became a question. Absorbing the concept of security in the new everyday life, as it is, is not an easy task, it comes with difficulties, perhaps even with disappointment when compared to the pre-pandemic past, but the perception of the vast majority of citizens is that security is a necessary condition. In our home, in our relationships with others, in our social behaviors, in our entertainment, in our shopping, in our work, in our movement, in a word everywhere. Restrictions follow the need for health protection. Hidden in the hope that this will not last long, it is the awareness of the lack of freedom that sustains this hope. On the other hand, it is very likely that the feeling and the security conditions will be re-evaluated and that we will make new individual protocols in our lives, even when the health risk has been overcome. However, the experience of the pandemic and its effects bring security to a position that requires choices and effort to conquer and is not just a given.
Another condition that is being re-evaluated is that of efficiency. The pandemic has proven to many people that our efficiency does not require saving the conditions of the past well. The success of homework, distance learning, communication technology and even people who would not expect it, the huge adaptation of digital communication with the state, services, businesses, the explosion of e-commerce, forced changes in the supply chain and much more, differentiate the definition of efficiency. They change the sense of useful time and prove that for many of our habits, before the pandemic, there are new solutions that not only support being efficient but help increase efficiency by reducing the time required. And so they help us to see new manifestations of efficiency, more qualitative than quantitative, that we were not used to, such as reading a book, relaxing, exercising or giving our children time.
The pandemic makes us and we review habits, priorities and values. Not everything we review will remain. But what will lead us to conscious choices that we think will improve our lives will remain. ”
